There are plans in motion to take down the internet1 and force us all to use their SHITnet2: total loss of internet freedom, advert-filled pages, maximum of maybe 200 sites - other sites blocked @ the core, your surfing, posting video/picture viewing etc tracked, saved and monitored by the government/isps.
The SHITnet2 will also include bandwidth-based subscription instead of the cool and cheap usage you can have now. 5gb, 40gb etc per month includes your browsing, video sending, video viewing etc. You pay for all the extra bandwidth you use with a fee per 1 gigabyte- probably 1 dollar per 1 xtra gig or more. This could mean hundreds or thousands of dollars for companies and I doubt anyone has the cash to pay those bills for long.
Sites like newgrounds, youtube, google, myspace etc have massive bandwidth requirements and they will have to pay for the extra bandwidth usage like the regular users do. This means that a lot of these sites you like to use for entertainment will just vanish due to the massive bandwidth usage bills these money-hungry isps will send them, if we let them go forth with their plans..
Teh great Internet 2008:
- The greatest freedom we have
- A place where everyone can be someone, make it big etc.
- A place where everyone can express themselves via music, videos, blogging, forums, flash animations, pictures, portraits, blogging, forums etc. Endless possibilities ftw.
- A totally unique way to access and find information about interesting subjects like science, music, culture and doing this without any content blocking, speed-throttling or extra payments.
- A cooler and easier way to find people for stuff than regular ways. Social masterpiece.
Internet 2012 (or possibly sooner or a bit later), unless we fight against it:
The lame companies are trying to make this freedom go away. If they succeed, the internet as we know, will be destroyed and a new very limited internet will emerge from the ashes.
You buy a "channel" package with 60 sites max for 29.99, 200 sites max for 39.99 or 2000 sites max for 49.99 and if you want to view other sites, you have to pay extra for each site. This way the isps can easily make you see what they want you to see and not the neutral and entertaining content you've gotten used to seeing now.
Isps can easily make corporations like google pay a lot of extra money for youtube's massive bandwidth needs, thus easily shutting down smaller companies with small budgets. They are already trying to do this with Amazon's new music/movie service.
Mmorpg companies probably have the chance to pay the new the isps set up in order to keep their online-gaming alive, but the online pwnage of games like counterstrike, will vanish, since P2P trafic and other types similar types of traffic will also erased.
